We met and camped at Sarah Totten Campground in Klamath National Forest, 35 miles west of I-5 on state route 96, just west of the confluence of the Scott and Klamath Rivers. This was to be a Family Trip and we had 11 kids, aged 5(!) to 12 vs. 12 adults. There was also a sweet, gentle female Rottweiler. The idea was to run an "easy" river that would be suitable for young children. IMHO, the adults to children ratio of 1:1 was pushing it a little. These were really young kids and the river was not that "easy." Fortunately, we had no mishaps except for one swimming mom, Ravenna. The Klamath is technically rated Class II+/III-. On this particular weekend, the river was full (~3000 cfs) and I would rate it III- with a bullet: few eddies, a couple of tricky little drops that weren't easy to read/run and a stiff up-canyon wind that added up to make it pretty challenging. We read everything from the river and scouted nothing. Steve captained the lead boat both days and thanks to him for doing a great job - only one swimmer, a grown-up. |
